Andrew Jun Chen
Inspired by the depth of relationships developed through collaboration, pianist Andrew Jun Chen has always been drawn to the ways in which chamber music closely mirrors human life. Particularly attracted to the sonorous blend of piano and strings, Andrew experienced some of his most profound musical experiences through an exploration of the piano trio repertoire.
He began studying the piano aged eight with Frederick Kuok, and has been a prizewinner at many competitions, including the Bradshaw & Buono International Piano Competition, International Young Artist Piano Competition in Washington D.C., MTNA Chamber Music String Performance Competition, Thousand Islands International Piano Competition, and NEC’s Marion Berman Piano Honors Competition. He was a finalist at the YCA Susan Wadsworth International Auditions, and the Naumburg Chamber Music Competition. Andrew has performed at festivals including the Chautauqua Institution, Perlman Music Program, the Young Artist Seminar at Kinhaven Music School, Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival Spring Workshop, and Olympic Music Festival Fellowship Program.
From the beginning of his undergraduate studies, Andrew developed an understanding of the dynamics of trio playing as a member of the Genesee Piano Trio, and later became recipient of the 2022 John Celentano Award for Excellence in Chamber Music at the Eastman School of Music. Andrew’s love for pedagogy has afforded him the opportunity to teach at Brooklyn Musical Arts in NYC and Chautauqua Festival community lessons. He is currently a TA Instructor for piano for non-majors at New England Conservatory. Andrew has been fortunate enough to collaborate with esteemed artists including Pei-Shan Lee, Itzhak Perlman, Cathy Cho, Ara Gregorian, Dmitri Murrath, Jessica Lee, and Alexander Fiterstein. He has participated in masterclasses with renowned pedagogues including Peter Frankl, Gary Graffman, Boris Slutsky, Jon Nakamatsu, and Natalya Antonova. Recent and upcoming season performance engagements include performances at Schneider Concerts, Music for Food, Rockport Music, Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts, Harvard Music Association, Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Society, and Jordan Hall.
Andrew graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance from the Eastman School of Music, where he studied under Alexander Kobrin. He holds a master’s degree from New England Conservatory, and is the pianist of Trio Eris, NEC’s Professional Piano Trio-in-Residence 2024-2026, under the guidance of Vivian Weilerstein and HaeSun Paik.
