Hillary Cheng

Hillary Cheng, at eighteen years of age, is in her first year of a Diploma in Music at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. She is currently studying with Wenhong Luo. Her previous teachers have included Alexandra Hiew and Felix Ungar. She started learning viola at the age of six and was admitted to the Junior Music Program at Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA). At the age of eleven, Hillary attained the Licentiate of Trinity College London degree in Viola Recital. She was the winner of the 2020 Diocesan Girls’ School (DGS) Concerto Competition and was featured in an episode of 'The Talent' on 3MBS radio in 2021. She has performed in masterclasses with Francesca Hiew (Australian String Quartet) and Howard Penny (Australian National Academy of Music).

Hillary has been an active chamber musician since 2016 as part of a string quartet that won top prizes in all ensemble categories at the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival. Previously, Hillary has been the viola section leader of the DGS Symphony Orchestra and Balwyn High Orchestra while also having performed with the Melbourne Youth Orchestra and the University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Hillary took part in the Melbourne Conservatorium Young Artists Academy in 2021/22 and participated in the 2022 Mimir Chamber Music Festival Melbourne.
