Luke Carmichael Valmadrid

Luke Carmichael Valmadrid will be a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, majoring in Biochemistry, Chemistry, and Violin Performance.

Originally from Portage, Wisconsin, Luke has served as the violist for the School of Music’s Perlman Ensemble since being selected in the Fall of 2015. He currently studies violin under Soh-Hyun Park Altino, viola under Sally Chisholm, and chamber music under Parry Karp.

At UW-Madison, he has performed for the guest masterclasses of the Takács Quartet, Jean-Michel Fonteneau, and David Kim. He attends UW-Madison through the First Wave Scholarship as a member of the 8th Cohort, specializing in hip-hop/animation dance styles and Ike-style spoken word poetry. He also currently serves as a research assistant for the Area Health Education Centers (AHEC), a research assistant in the Otolaryngology Division of the UW-SMPH Department of Surgery, a writer in the UW-Madison Cartography Lab, a UW-Madison Writing Fellow, the Poetry Editor for the Illumination Journal, and a Phi Beta Kappa Fellow.

Luke was recently accepted as an Orchestra Fellow for the 2018 Immanuel and Helen Olshan Texas Music Festival Orchestral Institute.

Important musical role models for Luke include Leslie Huang, Hilary Hahn, and Ariana Grande.
